Community colleges located in the greater Houston area

Community colleges often provide an inexpensive option for students who want a four-year degree or who want to learn a trade that requires two or less years of college education.

In the greater Houston area, there are a number of options for students who want to learn. The Texas Gulf Coast Community College Consortium is a “partnership of nine public community colleges along the Gulf Coast of Texas that work together to advance the mission of community college education, train the workforce- work in the region and enrich the learning experience of students”.

According to the consortium, member schools have nearly 200,000 students enrolled in credit courses and another 60,000 enrolled in continuing education or workforce courses. The number of students enrolled in credit courses represents “nearly a quarter of the total enrollment of all Texas community college students.”

The consortium has divided school districts in the region which determine which students will pay tuition in the district when they attend one of the community colleges. For example, most schools in Montgomery County are aligned with Lone Star College. Students in Harris County school districts can go to Lone Star College, Houston Community College, or San Jacinto College. Some research is needed to determine which college system will allow high school graduates to pay fees in the district.

Costs can vary significantly depending on residency status. For example, at Houston Community College, an in-district student will pay approximately $84.50 per credit hour, compared to $180.50 for out-of-district students and $227 for out-of-state students.
