Campus Pride has released its 2021 Best of the Best LGBTQ-Friendly Colleges and Universities list, and for the second time in two years, Kent State University has landed there. Kent State is the only public university in Ohio to make the 2021 list and the only Mid-American Conference school to receive this recognition.
Celebrating its 20th year, Campus Pride continued to support college and university campuses to help improve campus life for LGBTQ students. The 2021 Best of the Best Colleges and Universities list is based on several factors, including information provided annually through the Campus Pride Index regarding policies, programs and practices.
Kent State also received 5 out of 5 stars on the Campus Pride Index for the second year in a row, which is one of 30 schools to achieve this rating.
Ken Ditlevson, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Plus (LGBTQ +) Center at Kent State, said the LGBTQ + Center has continued to grow over the past year and has implemented new initiatives for the make it even better than ever.
“We are working on adding pronouns to our student rosters and to places intended for students, such as our dorms,” ââhe said. “We are also working with our DeWeese Health Center to provide more supports and options for trans health care.”
The LGBTQ + Center connects students with university and community resources and provides students with opportunities for involvement and leadership. Some of these resources include the QUEST Mentorship Program, LGBTQ Library, LGBTQ Emergency Fund, Minor LGBTQ Studies, College Counseling Services, University Legal Services, Universal Toilet Card, Name Change Process preferred and inclusive accommodation.
Student engagement and leadership opportunities provided by the Kent State LGBTQ + Center include PRIDE! Kent, Threads (LGBTQ students of color), QGrad and Trans * Fusion.
