UT Austin snags No. 8 ranking among top public colleges in the US

The University of Texas at Austin is a featured student among the best colleges in the USA

A new ranking from the Niche education review and information platform ranks UT Austin 8th among the nation’s top 601 public colleges — and the top public school in Texas.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology holds the top spot nationally for best college, with Rice University Houston ranking 6th and UT Austin ranking 46th. Rice also beat out UT Austin for best college in Texas.

UT Austin also ranked highly in other categories, including:

  • No. 1 of 70 in top Texas college athletics (maybe the data didn’t include UT football?).
  • #1 of 43 in Texas’ Top Communications Colleges; #7 of 925 nationally.
  • #1 of 77 colleges with the best student life in Texas.
  • #1 out of 43 in top accounting and finance colleges in Texas; #7 of 829 nationally.

Here’s how the other top colleges in Texas ranked, according to Niche:

  • Rice University in Houston, #6 in the US and #1 in Texas. Rice also ranks sixth on the list of top private colleges in the United States and first in Texas.
  • Texas A&M University at College Station, #75 in the US and #3 in Texas.
  • Southern Methodist University in Dallas, #82 in the US and #4 in Texas.
  • Trinity University in San Antonio, #99 in the US and #5 in Texas.
  • Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, #104 in the US and #6 in Texas.
  • Texas Tech University in Lubbock, #148 in the US and #7 in Texas.
  • Baylor University in Waco, #172 in the US and #8 in Texas.
  • University of Texas at Dallas, #220 in the US and #9 in Texas.
  • University of Houston, #232 in the US and #10 in Texas.

To create the college rankings, Niche combines data from sources like the U.S. Department of Education with user feedback—reviews and ratings from current students, alumni, and parents—into an analysis of factors such as academics, campus, and value for the financial investment. The rankings compare over 1,000 colleges and universities across the country.
