SALT LAKE CITY – This fall, enrollments at Utah’s public colleges and universities increased by more than 4,600 students compared to last fall, according to the Utah Higher Education System.
The system’s fall enrollment showed total enrollment was up 2.24% from a year ago to 211,954 students. As of fall 2020, the number of students was 207,305.
“We are coming out of a difficult year and I am happy that enrollments have increased overall,” Higher Education Commissioner Dave Woolstenhulme said in a press release. “It is imperative that we continue to work with students statewide to access and complete higher education to provide a skilled workforce, and beyond, to achieve individual and continued success at school. statewide. “
Among state universities, Southern Utah University leads the pack with enrollment growth of 8.18%.
“Even with obstacles like COVID and flooding and the displacement of students into housing and a housing shortage, we were still able to grow, and that is a testament to our campus, those who work so hard and the students who wanted to be here.” SUU Interim President Mindy Benson said in an interview with KSL.
SUU said much of the growth can be attributed to a 42% increase in the school’s online curriculum, which now accounts for 6% of the student body.
The population of SUU also set a new record with 13,611 students enrolled.
“SUU has long been a hidden gem and I think we’ve definitely been discovered,” Benson said.
To tackle the housing shortage at SUU, Benson said the school is working with local developers and construction is underway for housing for around 500 students.
The University of Utah had the second highest enrollment growth rate with an increase of 4.18%.
“This is an incredible and exciting milestone for the University of Utah,” University of Utah President Taylor Randall said in a statement.
U’s enrollment increased to a total of 34,424 students, the highest number in the history of the school.
“In our 171 year history, this is the greatest we’ve ever been,” said Steve Robinson, U’s senior associate vice president for registration management. “This is the first time that our first year class has exceeded 5,000 students.
Robinson said the widespread growth is due to a variety of factors, including widespread awareness among new students during the pandemic.
“When you recruit students, you’re used to a lot of face-to-face meetings, and that obviously hasn’t been possible over the past 18 months,” Robinson explained in an interview with KSL. “The methods we have used have enabled us to reach and reach many more students than ever before. “
The University of Utah reported that first-time freshman enrollment increased nearly 20% to 5,361 students.
“The U has also enrolled a historically high number of national students of color, international students, and in-state and out-of-state students,” University of Utah said. in a press release.
